In developing a series of drawings based on the Voyage of the Forlorn Hope in 1865, I
would often stray from the main theme to indulge myself in creating works, mostly of a
humorous nature.  Working with boats, fish and animals it seemed plausible to me that
migratory birds would ferry themselves by boat across the seas, perhaps in a similar
outrigged fashion as we see here, complete with a book, reading lamp, business brief
case, a fishing rod for catching food, boating equipment and other assorted items, along
with its family safely encased in shells.
